Washington Group International (WGI) (NYSE: WNG), now a division of URS Group, Inc.[1], was a Boise, Idaho, U.S. engineering firm with a 50 year relationship with the Department of Energy's Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL). It currently has $3 billion in annual revenues from a variety of government contracts including in Iraq. Go here for the Center for Public Integrity's review of WGI.

WGI was awarded a $300 million subcontract by British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL) for help in constructing a transuranic reprocessing facility in Boise in 1997 with the goal of removing 65,000 cubic meters of transuranic waste from INEEL to the Waste Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP) in New Mexico. WGI has been managing the WIPP facility since 1985. It has been in subcontractee relationships with all the major DOE contractors.

It is currently involved in nuclear waste issues on a global scale. According to an August 16th 2007 Guardian article WGI has taken the lead in bidding £500m for a contract to manage Britain's low-level atomic waste dump at Drigg in west Cumbria. WNG is also in competition to take the £15 billion contract for the cleanup of Sellfield in Scotland. Its partners on the Cumbria contract are Britain's Serco and France's Areva.

  • Manage the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Savannah River Site

  • Manages the Waste Isolation Pilot Project in New Mexico
