Harrison worked for the National Cattlemen's Beef Association for fifteen years including as executive director of public relations. In 2001 she was appointed as the U.S. Department of Agriculture's press secretary and director of communications. Harrison was the USDA's PR point person on mad cow disease, when it was first discovered in the United States in 2003.
