"Elizabeth Smith was created a life peer in 1995, as Baroness Smith of Gilmorehill and has a special interest in Russia and the CIS countries. She started her career with the Great-Britain USSR Association, later the British East -West Centre, http://www.bewc.org/en/history_en.php , an organisation dedicated to sustaining dialogue and contact with the countries of the then Soviet Union and core-funded by the UK FCO. Working closely with Sir Fitzroy Maclean, Chairman of the organisation, she developed a commitment to the importance of breaking down stereotypes by bringing people together in shared experience.

"Baroness Smith is Chair of the John Smith Trust, which runs a Fellowship programme for the next generation of leaders from the CIS countries thereby creating a network of emerging leaders across the region. The programme is supported by the UK FCO." [1]

"With interests in culture and the arts, Baroness Smith managed a number of major British culture festivals and is currently President of Scottish Opera. She sits on the boards of several organisations with interests in Ukraine and other former Soviet Union countries, and is a Board Member of the Centre for European Reform. Baroness Smith leads the John Smith Fellowship Trust which finances young professionals from Ukraine and other countries to come to the UK to study the principles of democracy and good government." [1]
