The Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education - Economics Institute Foundation (CERGE-EI Foundation) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1991. It "is the first and foremost economics Ph.D and research institute in Central and Eastern Europe [and] serves as a higher educator for the entire former Soviet bloc as well as other economies in transition, including Iraq, Afghanistan, African countries and other developing nations."[1][2] CERGE-EI is a joint project of Charles University and the Czech Academy of Sciences. The foundation's U.S. partner was founded in 1995 and is based in New Jersey.[2]

CERGE-EI's stated goals are:[1]

  • To promote the western ideals of free and open inquiry and nondiscriminatory education.
  • To educate economists for government, academia, and industry in countries where such skills are critically lacking.
  • To promote research in theoretical and applied policy-related economics, especially with respect to the transition from communism to free markets.

The think tank Institute for Democracy and Economic Analysis (IDEA) is a project of CERGE-EI.[3]
