Charles A. Heimbold, Jr. "served as the United States Ambassador to Sweden from September 2001 - February 2004.

"Ambassador Heimbold was formerly Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, a firm which he joined in 1963. He was elected a Director of the Company in 1989 and became President in 1992. On January 1, 1994, he was named Chief Executive Officer and in September 2001 he was named Chairman Emeritus. Ambassador Heimbold was with the New York law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy from 1960-1963. Earlier he served as a destroyer officer in the US Navy from 1954-1957 in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, Red Sea and Persian Gulf.

"Reflecting a strong commitment to education, he supports a number of leading institutions. He served as Chairman of the Board of Overseers of the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania as well as a Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania and the American Museum of Natural History. He is a past Trustee of Sarah Lawrence College and a past Trustee of International House.

"Other activities to which Ambassador Heimbold devoted his time include serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Phoenix House, a non-profit agency devoted to drug abuse treatment for adults and children. In addition, he served as a member of the Commonwealth Fund Commission on Women’s Health. He is currently Vice-Chairman of the Heimbold Foundation.

Ambassador Heimbold served as Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and a member of the Board of Directors of ExxonMobil Corporation. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and was active in The Business Roundtable and The Business Council. He was also Chairman of Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.

"He was born May 27, 1933, and is an honors graduate of Villanova University, having graduated in 1954, and of the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1960, where he was a member of the Law Review. He also received a Master of Laws degree from New York University and completed a program at The Hague Academy of International Law in the summer of 1959. In May 1998, he received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Villanova University and in May 2000, he received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Evansville. In June 2000, he received the Mandela Award from the MEDUNSA Trust in recognition of the AIDS relief program in Africa that he initiated.

"Ambassador Heimbold and his wife, Monika, have been married for 42 years and have four children and two grandchildren." [1]
