{{#badges: CoalSwarm}}Churchill Mining Plc is a coal company registered in the UK with offices in Indonesia and Australia. It has a 75% ownership and controlling interest in the East Kutai Coal Project of East Kalimantan, Indonesia, with the balance being held by the Indonesian partners, the Ridlatama Group. Churchill also has a strategic holding in Spitfire Resources (15.99%), who are developing the South Woodie Woodie Manganese Project in Western Australia.[1]

Dispute over East Kalimantan coal reserves

In May 2008, after acquiring a 75% share in four licenses in East Kalimantan that had originally been awarded to the Ridlatama Group, Churchill Coal disclosed that the reserve was a massive one -- 2.73 billion tons, the seventh largest undeveloped coal asset in the world. The licenses covered an area in the East Kutai district that had once been controlled by the Nusantara Group, a politically connected Indonesian conglomerate. In May 2010, district head Isran Noor extended Nusantara's license and revoked the Churchill license, accusing Churchill of conducting illegal logging. Representatives of Churchill objected that Noor's actions were illegal and sought relief in the Indonesian courts. In May 2012, Churchill filed for arbitration at the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes in Washington, D.C. [2][3]

In August 19, 2011 the Administrative High Court in Jakarta agreed wholly with the legal considerations and findings of the Administrative Tribunal in Samarinda, which had revoked the four mining licenses that comprise the East Kutai Coal Project.[4]
