U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is an agency of the U.S. government with around 34,600 civilian and 650 military workers. The top person, Robert L. Van Antwerp, with the title Chief of Engineers and Commander, has his office in the Pentagon. USACE is involved in the construction and maintenance of 250 U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force military bases in nearly 100 countries around the world. In the civilian area, it builds dams and locks and works in flood control in the U.S. [1] [2] [3]

  • Water resources - working on rivers, lakes, wetlands, and thousands of miles of coastal shoreline.
  • Environment - manages numerous environmental programs, from cleaning up areas on former military installations contaminated by hazardous waste or munitions to helping establish wetlands that help endangered species.
  • Military infrastructure - "As part of its Military Construction program the Corps contributes to the defense mission by building Communities of Excellence from which U.S. military power can be projected worldwide." This includes training facilities, barracks, dining halls, hospitals, and recreation centers on military bases.
  • Civilian infrastructure - the Corps maintains direct control of 609 dams, maintains and/or operates 257 navigation locks, and operates 75 hydroelectric facilities generating 24% of the nation's hydropower and three percent of its total electricity
  • Homeland Security - they work to support "growing national homeland security missions"
