Craig Varoga, campaign manager of former Iowa Goveronor, Tom Vilsack’s now-cancelled 2008 presidential campaign, registered a new 527 entity, the Bluegrass Freedom Fund and is listed as its director.

Varoga previously had conducted opposition research and worked as communications director for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

The group's stated purpose is “to communicate with the public on issues that relate to the election of a candidate for state or local office, or the legislative process in a manner that does not expressly advocate the election or defeat of a particular candidate.”

Vigoda acknowledged to the Washington Post that some interested donors are funding the group "as an opportunity" to raise issues in Kentucky, with Mitch McConnell on the ballot in 2008 and a hotly contested governor's race later this year.
