Demetrious Moschandreas was associated with the family of tobacco lobbyist Theodor Sterling in a number of different ways. He was at the University of Cincinnati when Theodor Sterling was there. Later he joined forces with the youngest son, David A Sterling to run a couple of tobacco-funded research projects through the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Research Institute (ITTRI). These mainly involved designing questionnaires to quiz staff and office executives about the various parameters of office space, the quality of the indoor air, and the health effects experienced by the occupants.

The direction of the projects and the design of the questionnaires are clearly aimed at producing data which can be used to dispute claims that indoor air quality (IAQ) is mainly polluted by environmental tobacco smoke (ETS).
