Duane Gilliam was appointed Chairman of VeraSun Energy "in June 2008 after serving on the board since January of 2005. Mr. Gilliam has spent nearly four decades in the oil industry, most recently as executive vice president of Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC. He joined Ashland Inc. as a process engineer in 1967 and was promoted to manager of Oil Movements and Economics in 1972. Since that time he has held a number of positions of increasing responsibility. In 1984, he was named executive assistant, director and vice president of Administration for Scurlock Oil Company in Houston. In 1991, he was named president of the new combined Scurlock Permian Corporation. He assumed responsibility as group vice president of Ashland Petroleum Company's Crude Oil Supply & Transportation in October 1992. In 1993, Mr. Gilliam served as executive vice president, Petroleum Operations and, thereafter, as senior vice president for Ashland Inc. and president of Ashland Petroleum Company before accepting the position of executive vice president in January 1998 with Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC, headquartered in Findlay, OH. In January 2001, he was named as executive vice president, corporate affairs.

"Mr. Gilliam is a member of the 25 Year Club of the Petroleum Industry. He has also served as a director on the boards of American Petroleum Institute (API), Colonial Pipeline, and as Chairman for the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association (NPRA) and Owner Representative Board of LOOP LLC,. He is currently non-executive Chairman of NTR Acquisition Company, LLC (Amex: NTQ), and serves on the Board of convenience/fuel store chain Super Quik.

"Gilliam received his undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky and is a graduate of Harvard University's Advanced Management Program. He is a 2003 inductee into the University of Kentucky Engineering Hall of Distinction." [1]
