"A Rhodes Scholar, Dr. Gerrit W. Gong holds Masters and Ph.D. degrees from Oxford University in International Relations. He has taught and researched on the faculties of Oxford, Georgetown, and Johns Hopkins Universities.

"Dr. Gong is Freeman Chair in China Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C., and has directed the CSIS Asian Studies Program since 1989.

"Dr. Gong's State Department assignments included serving as Special Assistant to two U.S. Ambassadors in the American Embassy in Beijing. He was in China during the Tiananmen period. He also served as Special Assistant to the senior career officer in the State Department, the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, as well as at the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT).

"Dr. Gong accompanied Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court Warren E. Burger as Personal Advisor on the Chief Justice's official visit to the PRC, Hong Kong, and Japan. He was Executive Officer for the state visit to China of then President and Mrs. George Bush. He serves as Executive Director for policy-level corporate and congressional delegations traveling to Asia. He testifies before Congress on a range of East Asia issues, e.g., the future of Hong Kong, PRC-Taiwan relations, etc.

"Born and raised in Palo Alto, California, Dr. Gong enjoys backpacking, photography, and racquet sports. He and his wife, the former Susan Lindsay, have four sons and live in McLean, Virginia." [1]
