Getting Started

Where to find the documents

Two web sites allow users to search documents from all of the major American tobacco companies' collections in one spot. Those sites are:

Documents from the British American Tobacco Company (which sells cigarettes outside the United States) can be searched by checking the British American Tobacco box on the search page at the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library

The Legacy Tobacco Documents Library has an on-site tutorial showing how to use the database.

How to start a new page

The best way to start a new page is to perform a search for the name you want to use using the search box at the left side of the screen. For example, enter the search term "Tony Soprano" and you'll get a page that says, "There is no page titled 'Tony Soprano.' You can create this page." The words "Create this page" will appear in red. When you click on the red link, you will arrive at a new page with a box where you can start entering information on the person. Enter the information about the person, group or document and click "Save Page" at the bottom of the screen.

Anywhere you see a red link, it means that information is needed on that subject. Just click the red link to start a new page on that person or topic.

IMPORTANT!

Add "Tobaccowiki" and "stub" tags at the top of the new page, like this (TO SEE THE TEXT NEEDED TO MAKE THESE IMAGES, CLICK THE "EDIT THIS PAGE" TAB ABOVE):

This article is a stub. You can help by expanding it.

The "Tobaccowiki" tag (with double curly brackets) puts the TobaccoSpin graphic on the page, the "stub" tag (also with double curly brackets) lets people know it's a new page and more information is still needed. Clicking on the "TobaccoSpin" picture also takes you back to the front page of the Tobaccowiki. Also remember to put categories at the bottom of the page, like this:

This will make the page easier to find. You can make up categories on the fly as you go.

You can also add the search box that takes you to the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library and searches on a particular term. To see the HTML syntax necessary to add this box, click on the "edit this page" tab above and look at the text that created this search box:

<tdo>search_term=Tony Soprano</tdo>

We're working on a way to add a search box that allows readers to search just the British American Tobacco Company documents in the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library, which are likely to contain more information on tobacco industry-related people in foreign countries.
