Grow More Food

India's Grow More Food campaign lasted from 1943 to 1951. Initially born out of a war-time emergency, the program continued as India grappled with food shortages following independence in 1947. "Some elements of the program sought higher production levels through expanded amounts of land in agriculture, and other components promoted better scientific practices in agriculture."[1] Between 1947 and 1951, India increased food production by 3 million tons per year, but continued to import food at roughly the same levels (or more) year after year.
