Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and Development

"Iwokrama - the Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and Development (IIC) – was the result of offer made in 1989 by then President of Guyana, Desmond Hoyte, on the occasion of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malaysia. This joint mandate between the Commonwealth and the Government of Guyana to manage Guyana’s Iwokrama Forest was successfully cemented in 1996 with the passing of the Iwokrama Act...

"The Board comprises fifteen Trustees. The President of Guyana and the Commonwealth Secretary-General appoint the Board Chairman. The Guyana Government appoints four Trustees, while the Commonwealth Secretariat appoints two. The President and the Commonwealth Secretary General select the remaining eight Trustees. There are currently ten Trustees. New appointments to the board are due shortly. His Royal Highness Charles, The Prince of Wales has been Patron for the last five years and recently agreed to remain for a further five years. The wider network of support and contacts available to partners of IIC is therefore exceptional in terms of diversity and expertise, both within Guyana and internationally." [1]

In 1993 they received a US$3 million grant from Global Environment Facility; in 1998 "US$10 million secured from International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), British Department for International Development (DFID), the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the European Commission."
