The Reverend Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., is Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ. For He is also Barack Obama's pastor.

Background

According to a biographical note, Wright completed his elementary education in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. "then went to Virginia Union University. After three and a half years at Virginia Union, Pastor Wright left school and entered the United States Marine Corps. He transferred from the USMC into the United States Navy where he served as a cardiopulmonary technician. After six years in the military" he "transferred to Howard University where he completed his undergraduate studies and received his first Master’s Degree."[1]

According to a biography on the Howard University website, "has pastored at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois since 1972, when membership numbered 87 adult members. Today, the congregation is nearly 10,000. Educated in the public schools of Philadelphia, Rev. Wright earned both a B.A. and an M.A. from Howard University, before receiving another M.A. from the University of Chicago. He studied under the eminent Samuel DeWitt Proctor at United Theological College, and received a doctorate in divinity. Rev. Wright takes seriously not only the call to worship but also the call to take action as mandated by the Gospel. Under his leadership, Trinity adopted the motto 'Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian' and has set out to make activism within and on behalf of the African-American community a key aspect of the church mission. ... An accomplished musician and author, he has written four books, numerous articles and countless sermons, and was also named one of America’s top fifteen preachers by Ebony Magazine. In addition to national and international ministry, Rev. Wright serves on several boards of directors and committees. With his wife, the Reverend Ramah Reed Wright, they have five children and three grandchildren."[2]

On March 19, 2008, Politico reported that Republican strategists are salivating over the "inflammatory sermons by Barack Obama's pastor" Jeremiah Wright. They believe that Wright's sermons "offer the party a pathway to victory if Obama emerges as the Democratic nominee. Not only will the video clips enable some elements of the party to define him as unpatriotic, they will also serve as a powerful motivating force for the conservative base."[3]
