"John joined Staffordshire Police in 1973 and progressed through the ranks to Divisional Commander first at Lichfield and, subsequently, at Cannock. In November 1991 he was appointed Assistant Chief Constable for North Yorkshire Police returning to Staffordshire in April 1996 as Chief Constable. From 2003 John served as ACPO 1st Vice President before retiring in 2006. He also chaired the ACPO Committee on General Policing which included national responsibility for Police Use of Firearms and Self Defence Arrest and Restraint. In addition John undertook the lead on Police pensions. Educated at Eton and Southampton University, John holds an Honours Degree in German with a certificate in Italian Studies. He is currently a board member of Alpha Intelligence Management Limited, a non-executive director of Keele University Science and Business Park and a board member of Communicaid Group Limited. He is also a Trustee of the Airey Neave Trust. John was a Vice-President of PMAS from May 2000 to May 2006 and was elected to the Committee of Management as Deputy Chairman in October 2006 prior to his appointment as Chairman in May 2007."[1]
