Larry Williams was a Philip Morris employee and Brand Manager for Virginia Slims at the time the brand was created in 1968. Williams stated in an interview about the new female-targeted brand,

In this case...we wanted something feminine, but with a tobacco feel. That's where the Virginia comes in. The American Tobacco Company had already coined 'thin' for their cigarette, Silva Thins, so that was out. Anyway, we decided that slim sounded better than thin, since most womenlike to think of themselves as slim, rather than skinny. And, of course, our marketing director's wife is named Virginia, so that might have had something to do with it.[1]
