MetLife, based in New York City, is one of the largest insurance companies in the U.S., its main subsidiary being Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. MetLife sells a range of insurance products: prepaid legal plans, annuities, auto insurance, disability income, home insurance, long-term care insurance, and it also does financial planning. Its international segment sells in the Asia/Pacific region, Europe, and Latin America. [1] [2]

In 2006, sales were US$48.4 billion with profits of US$6.3 billion. [1]

Political contributions

Metropolitan Life gave $472,920 to federal candidates in the 2006 election through its political action committee - 48% to Democrats, 50% to Republicans, and 2% to other parties. [3]

Lobbying

The company spent $2,290,000 for lobbying in the first half of 2007. Two of the lobbying firms used were Venn Strategies, LLC and Quinn Gillespie & Associates. [4]
