Dr. Peter Scaife has been a scientist and researcher for BHP since 1969, culminating in the position of Chief Environmental Scientist between 1996 and 1998. In that position he was responsible for "providing scientific support to strategic environmental issues in BHP; in particular, greenhouse, tailings management, water impacts and heavy metals." [1]

In 1998 Scaife was appointed to the position of Director of the Centre for Sustainable Technology at the University of Newcastle, where he had previously been a teaching fellow.

Scaife is generally of the opinion that climate change is a problem, and says, "I am increasingly of the view that major reductions in greenhouse gas emissions can be achieved in many sectors of the economy, without adversely impacting on our standard of living."
