"Graduate of New College, Oxford (first class honours in Classics, Philosophy and Ancient History). Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, 1951-73, 1987-9 and since 1997.

"Member of the British Diplomatic Service from 1951 to 1987. Served in London (foreign Office and Cabinet Office), Bonn, Nicosia, Tel Aviv, Saigon, Madrid (minister 1973-7), Moscow (Minister 1977-9) and New Delhi (High Commissioner 1982-7). Deputy Secretary of the Cabinet 1979-82.
