Stand Up To China (SUTC) is based in Tampa, Florida and registered as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).[1]

Stand Up To China’s website provides little information about the group other than noting that it was “formed to help give American citizens a voice in the policy battles against China.” Its first IRS filing states that it is: “Engaged in targeted advertising and mass communications to raise awareness of issues related to the Chinese Communist Party and its impact on the world.” That includes raising awareness on such issues as “Chinese technology in American cell towers, Chinese apps collecting Americans’ data, [and] the Chinese crackdown in Hong Kong.”[1]

Right-wing attorney Cleta Mitchell, a voter fraud conspiracy theorist, founded Stand Up To China and serves as its board secretary.

News and Controversies

Stand Up To China Funnels $1.6 Million in 2021 to Little Known Super PAC

SUTC distributed $1.6 million in grants to the National Victory Action Fund, a little-known super PAC that has disclosed spending $100,000 for digital ads in support of Ron Johnson, the Republican senior senator from Wisconsin seeking reelection in 2022, the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) reported.[2]

As a super PAC, NVAF is required to disclose its donors to the FEC, unlike the nonprofit SUTC, which is not legally required to do so.

Ties to the Council for National Policy

As of September 2020, Stand Up To China's founder and secretary Cleta Mitchell is a Board of Governors member of the Council for National Policy.

Council for National Policy

The Council for National Policy (CNP) is a secretive, Christian Right organization of funders and activists founded in 1981 by activist Morton Blackwell, commentator Paul Weyrich, direct-mail pioneer Richard Viguerie, right-wing activist Phyllis Schlafly and Left Behind author Tim LaHaye. Anne Nelson's book about CNP, Shadow Network: Media, Money, and the Secret Hub of the Radical Right, describes how the organization connects "the manpower and media of the Christian right with the finances of Western plutocrats and the strategy of right-wing Republican political operatives.”

CNP membership as of September 2020 is available here.
