As Reagan's National Security Advisor, Allen reflected the hard-line anticommunism of his boss. Among Allen's first priorities was dismantling arms embargoes imposed by the Jimmy Carter administration for human rights violations of various repressive regimes. Allen famously defended renewing support of Argentina's military junta, noting that he would not "throw our friends to the wolves." The junta was at the time in the midst of their "dirty war," resulting in the deaths and disappearances of some 30,000 Argentinian leftists and their family members.
