We Are About to Go Into Production with the Motion Picture, "Run Sheep Run", A Suspense, Thriller, Set in Los Angeles.

This 1972 letter taken from the R.J. Reynolds (RJR)document collection demonstrates the relationship between movie makers and cigarette companies. In it, the president of a movie-making company avails the Chief Executive Officer of RJR an opportunity to place his company's cigarette brands in a major motion picture in which, the moviemaker assures the CEO, "The major characters and supporting people in the script all smoke." The movie maker writes the CEO (in a line that is still true today,)

"...the film is better than any commercial that has been run on Television or any magazine, because the audience is totally unaware of the sponsor involvement."

He requests that RJR pay $500,000 for the placement, which is roughly the equivalent of over $2 million in today's dollars.
