Max Samfield (Research Asst. Liggett Group 1960-71): Max Samfield was Research Assistant to Dr. Bates, Senior Assistant Director of Liggett Group, Inc. from 1960 through 1971. (N.M., L & M Liability Notebook, Section 3, Personnel List) He was a long time Liggett Scientist. In 1980 he wrote that "[W]hite tipped cigarettes are generally judged to be "milder" and has a "health" image." (1996 memo from Clifford Douglas regarding articles identifying industry insiders who might testify as to improper conduct of Liggett regarding safer cigarette research, etc.)
