This is an overview and index of the fake indoor air conferences and symposia funded and controlled by the tobacco industry. There were a number of different aims in running these conferences:

1. They acted as training grounds for many of the new WhiteCoats who had some academic qualifications, but needed to be taught enough to pass as experts in the field.

2. For more established ETS consultants and company staff, they were socialising events. They got to know who they were dealing with in the corruption of science, and who could be trusted to list as peer-reviewers of various sham research project.

3. Many academics welcome conferences of this kind as a way to get away from the day-to-day task of teaching students.

4. An invitation to speak at a conference is a measure of success in universities

5. A published speech or a (outline) included in the proceedings -- even one actually written by the Tobacco Industry staff -- was viewed by university associates as the equivalent of a peer-reviewed study paper accepted by a major journal.

6. The number of citations under a scientists name is seen as a measure of academic achievement
